New Delhi, Aug 23: The Petroleum Ministry has urged States and Union Territories to step up efforts to shift households from LPG to piped natural gas (PNG) and provide district-level administrative support for the transition.
In an August 21 letter to State chief secretaries, Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal sought the appointment of nodal officers who can coordinate with gas distributors and oil marketing companies to facilitate faster PNG adoption.
Mittal said PNG offers a safer, cleaner and more efficient cooking fuel option and can play an important role in advancing India’s energy transition.
He said greater adoption of PNG would also help reduce the logistical burden associated with LPG distribution, improve consumer convenience and ensure better utilisation of the city gas distribution (CGD) infrastructure developed through significant public and private investment.
The Ministry has asked States and Union Territories to extend necessary administrative support at the district level to ensure smoother coordination among stakeholders and accelerate the shift towards piped gas.
The initiative is part of the Centre’s broader efforts to promote cleaner energy sources and strengthen the use of existing CGD infrastructure across the country.
