SRINAGAR : As part of COVID response ActionAid Kashmir has initiated a family support programme for worst affected households in Kashmir, an official spokesperson said on Saturday.
Sheikh Nadiya Habib, who is currently leading the Kashmir chapter of the organization said they stepped in to help the communities worst affected by the continuous lockdown and has so far reached out to about 21 villages in Srinagar and Pulwama district.
ActionAid and its volunteers provided food support to these families by providing a small dry ration food kit and a sanitation kit comprising of daily essentials for a month. ActionAid placed priority on reaching out to the most vulnerable households belonging to BPL, people engaged in daily wage earning, fruits and vegetable vendors, single women, family without any bread earner.
ActionAid also raised awareness among people about the precautions to be taken in view of COVID-19 and how to keep their children safe and COVID-free.
ActionAid teamed up with one of the local organization-Help Together foundation (HTF) that was functional on grounds for COVID response.
AA has also been closely working with Young Urban Women in this difficult time for assisting them and helping them with their problems and issues they are facing. “Action Aid has been working in Kashmir since 2003 closely with the poor and excluded, with focus on women and children,” she said adding that its core areas of work have been mental health, disaster management and rehabilitation, livelihood generation, Child protection, and Policy research and advocacy.
Nadiya said the relief distribution was done in close coordination with the district administrations of Srinagar and Pulwama and thanked Deputy Commissioners of both the districts for facilitating the relief distribution by providing permissions, movement passes and vehicles for transport and the supporting staff to assist them in the distribution.
