LEH, Aug 20: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Leh on Thursday on his maiden visit to Ladakh, a day after meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar, officials said.
Gor, who also serves as the US envoy to South and Central Asia, travelled to Leh from Srinagar on Thursday morning.
The US envoy had arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday and held a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Following the interaction, Gor described the meeting as “very good” and “very cordial”.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the Chief Minister, Gor said Jammu and Kashmir is an important part of India.
“As everybody here knows, I am the US Ambassador to India. And this is an important part of India. I am here visiting for the first time,” he said.
Gor's visit to Ladakh comes amid growing diplomatic and strategic interest in the region, which shares sensitive borders with China and Pakistan.
