PM Modi Highlights Revival of Kashmir’s Traditional ‘Vagu’ Mat in Mann Ki Baat
NEW DELHI, July 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the revival of Kashmir’s traditional ‘Vagu’ mat during his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, describing the centuries-old craft as an eco-friendly symbol of the Valley’s rich cultural heritage. The Prime Minister said the handmade mat, crafted from reeds and paddy straw, has been a part of Kashmiri households for generations due to its unique ability to keep homes cool in summer and warm in winter. “The tradition of making Kashmir’s traditional ‘Vagu’ mat dates back many years. It is unique and eco-friendly, providing coolness during summer and warmth in winter,” Modi said. He noted that although the mat was once a common feature in almost every household in Kashmir, its popularity had declined over the years. Modi lauded Srinagar-based artisan Ghulam Hussain and his daughter Tanzila for their efforts to revive the traditional craft and preserve an important part of Kashmir’s cultural legacy. “When talent is combined with determination, every challenge becomes easier to overcome,” the Prime Minister said, describing their work as an inspiring example of safeguarding traditional craftsmanship for future generations. He said the revival of the ‘Vagu’ mat reflects the importance of preserving India’s rich cultural heritage while promoting sustainable and eco-friendly traditions.
