Nikhil Singh Wins Ladakh Marathon, Credits Mental Strength and Strategy for Victory

Leh, September 13: Nikhil Singh emerged as the winner of the high-altitude Ladakh Marathon on Sunday, completing the gruelling race in 2 hours, 44 minutes and 40 seconds.

The Mumbai-based elite runner, who was making his debut in the Ladakh Marathon, said his mental strength, consistency and race strategy helped him secure the top spot.

“I didn’t walk at all. I didn’t want to slow down. The last climb was a bit tough, still I didn’t walk. My mental strength and right strategy paid off,” Nikhil said after the race.

He said he was confident of finishing in the top three and gained further confidence as the race progressed.

Nikhil, who was visiting Ladakh for the first time, said he had limited experience running at high altitudes. Before Ladakh, he had participated in a race in Spiti.

“I am an Indian elite runner. Otherwise, my best is 2 hours 22 minutes. Actually, my event is 42 km. I had the preparation, but I had no experience of high altitude,” he said.

He arrived in Ladakh around nine to ten days before the race and underwent speed training. However, he initially struggled to acclimatise, suffering from headaches, dizziness and sleeplessness during his first few days.

Nikhil said he was unfamiliar with the marathon route and initially followed other runners. Once he reached the flatter sections, he used his strength to increase his pace and build a lead.

The marathon winner said he plans to return next year to defend his title and improve his timing. He also highlighted his recent performances, including a Maharashtra State medal in the 10-km event and participation in major races such as the Tata Mumbai Marathon.

However, Nikhil said a lack of financial support remains a major challenge in taking his career to the next level.

“I am trying to reach the next level. But there is no financial support. I am trying to get support from somewhere. Otherwise, I am wasting my time,” he said.
