KATHMANDU, Sep 3: The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal rose to 1,252 on Thursday as rescue teams recovered more bodies from the affected areas, while nearly 4,900 people remain missing more than a week after the disaster, police said.
According to data released by Nepal Police, Chitawan recorded the highest number of fatalities at 355, followed by Nawalparasi East with 218 and Nawalparasi West with 208. Of the bodies recovered in Nawalparasi West, 18 were found in India and subsequently handed over to authorities in Nepal.
Nuwakot reported 177 deaths, while 127 bodies were recovered from Rasuwa, 69 from Gorkha, 60 from Dhading and 38 from Tahanu district.
Joint rescue teams led by the Nepal Army continued search and recovery operations for the ninth consecutive day on Thursday. The number of people reported missing has been estimated at 4,875.
The flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, caused widespread devastation across northern and central Nepal, destroying settlements and leaving thousands of people missing.
Rescue and search operations remain underway in several affected areas as authorities continue efforts to locate those still unaccounted for and recover victims.
