NEW DELHI, Aug 11: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed two Bills, including legislation seeking to rename Kerala as Keralam, without debate amid continued Opposition protests demanding the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, moved by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, was passed by voice vote amid sloganeering. The National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was also cleared without discussion.
Opposition MPs raised slogans and displayed placards in the Well, protesting over student demonstrations and alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Of the 11 Bills passed by the Lok Sabha so far, only two have been debated, while the rest were cleared amid disruptions.
Earlier, Speaker Om Birla urged both the government and Opposition to find common ground and allow the House to discuss key legislation.
The Opposition has been demanding Amit Shah’s response on alleged police action against students protesting over paper leaks. The Congress has also insisted on a discussion over alleged irregularities in Ram temple donations.
With the Monsoon Session scheduled to end on August 13, uncertainty remains over the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill and the Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Amendment Bill.
