LG VK Saxena Declares Ladakh India’s First 100% Organic Union Territory

Leh, October 25: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has declared Ladakh India’s first 100 per cent organic Union Territory, marking a major milestone in sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.

The achievement recognises the efforts of farmers and the Ladakh Administration in promoting chemical-free farming practices across the strategically important Himalayan region.

The move is expected to help protect Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem, improve soil and water health, enhance farmers’ incomes and preserve traditional agricultural practices. The region’s unique climatic conditions and long-standing farming traditions have also contributed to its transition towards organic agriculture.

Congratulating farmers and other stakeholders, Saxena described the declaration as a matter of pride for Ladakh and the country. He said the achievement demonstrated that environmentally sustainable agriculture was possible even in challenging geographical conditions.

In July 2026, the Lieutenant Governor ordered a complete ban on the procurement, distribution, sale, marketing and use of chemical and synthetic fertilisers for agricultural purposes across Ladakh. The measure aims to protect organic certification, conserve natural resources and ensure the long-term sustainability of farming.

The Administration has also taken steps to support farmers during the transition. In March 2026, consignments of organic fertilisers were dispatched for distribution among farmers across Ladakh’s villages ahead of the sowing season.

The organic status is expected to create new opportunities for local produce, including apricots, sea buckthorn, buckwheat, barley and vegetables. Better certification, packaging, value addition and market access could help farmers secure improved prices for their products.

Saxena stressed that the achievement must translate into tangible economic benefits for the farming community. He called for stronger market linkages, scientific support and the development of organic supply chains to improve farmers’ livelihoods.

He also expressed hope that Ladakh’s experience would encourage other states and Union Territories to explore sustainable agricultural practices suited to their local conditions.
