JMC Launches Coconut Shredding Unit to Recycle Waste, Prevent Drain Choking

Jammu, Aug 2: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a coconut shredding unit to convert discarded coconut shells into eco-friendly cocopeat, aiming to curb drain blockages and promote sustainable waste management in the city. The facility, inaugurated by JMC Commissioner Devansh Yadav at Bhagwati Nagar on Saturday, will process coconut shells collected from vendors into cocopeat, a natural growing medium widely used in horticulture, landscaping and composting. Under the initiative, JMC will collect discarded coconut shells directly from registered vendors across Jammu city and transport them to the shredding unit for scientific processing. To streamline the collection process, all coconut vendors will be issued special identification stickers, enabling municipal collection vehicles to easily identify registered outlets and ensure timely collection of the waste. Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Devansh Yadav said the initiative will help prevent drains and sewer networks from getting clogged with coconut shells, thereby reducing the risk of waterlogging during the monsoon while converting waste into a useful resource. He also appealed to vendors and residents to dispose of coconut shells responsibly and cooperate with the municipal collection system to support cleaner surroundings and obstruction-free drainage across Jammu.
