SRINAGAR, Sep 22: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Tuesday moved a resolution in the Legislative Assembly seeking an amendment to the Right to Education (RTE) Act to exempt teachers appointed before October 31, 2019, from appearing for the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).
Education Minister Sakeena Itoo moved the resolution, urging the Union Government to amend Section 23 of the RTE Act, 2009, to provide the exemption.
The resolution also called for necessary legal steps and notification through the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to implement the exemption.
Legislators Balwant Singh Mankotia, Ranbir Singh Pathania, Waheed Ur Rehman Para and Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh participated in the discussion and spoke on various aspects of the proposal.
The debate on the resolution will continue during the next working day of the Assembly.
A similar demand has also been raised by teachers' associations in J&K, which have pointed to the applicability of the RTE framework in the Union Territory from October 31, 2019
