MOSCOW, Aug 25: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held wide-ranging talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday, focusing on bilateral cooperation, regional developments, global challenges and multilateral issues.
The two ministers also discussed the situations in Ukraine, Iran and Afghanistan, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.
“Wide-ranging conversation this evening with FM Sergey Lavrov of Russia. Discussed our bilateral cooperation, regional hotspots, global challenges and multilateral issues,” Jaishankar posted on X.
Jaishankar, who arrived in Moscow on Sunday, is on a two-day visit to Russia ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit on September 12-13.
According to TASS, the discussions covered major issues on the international agenda, with both sides coordinating their approaches towards developments in Afghanistan, Iran and Ukraine.
The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to close coordination at the United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, BRICS and G20.
The ministers agreed to strengthen trust-based dialogue at various levels, the report said.
The talks come as India and Russia seek to further expand economic engagement and cooperation across several sectors.
On Monday, Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin, with discussions focusing on bilateral economic ties, including trade, energy, fertilisers and nuclear cooperation.
Jaishankar also co-chaired a meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
