NEW DELHI, Nov 7: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has achieved a major operational milestone after its Russian-origin IL-76MD heavy transport aircraft successfully landed at the Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh.
The IAF described the landing as the highest-altitude touchdown ever achieved by the aircraft anywhere in the world.
Located at an altitude of approximately 13,000 feet, Nyoma airbase is situated around 25 kilometres from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, making it strategically important for India’s military operations along the eastern Ladakh frontier.
Announcing the achievement on social media, the Indian Air Force said the IL-76MD had scripted history with its successful landing at Nyoma.
The force termed the operation a remarkable demonstration of the aircraft’s capabilities, highlighting the exceptional skill, precision and professionalism of its crew.
The IAF further described the achievement as an important milestone that strengthens India’s strategic airlift capabilities.
The successful landing is significant for military aviation operations in the high-altitude region of Ladakh, where challenging terrain and extreme geographical conditions make aircraft operations particularly demanding.
