KISHTWAR, Aug 15: At least five people were killed on Saturday after a Mahindra Scorpio skidded off the road and plunged into the Chenab River in the Dachhan area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, officials said.
According to officials, the vehicle, bearing registration number HR29AG-0648, was travelling from Dangdaroo towards Sounder when the accident occurred at Yainwan in the Dangdaroo area at around 10:45 am.
The Scorpio reportedly lost control, skidded off the road and rolled down into the Chenab River.
Following the accident, a rescue operation was immediately launched by personnel from Police Station Dachhan, with assistance from local residents and other teams.
Officials said five bodies had been recovered from the accident site so far. The identities of the deceased are being ascertained.
The exact number of people travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident was not immediately known.
Rescue and recovery operations were continuing, while authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the accident.
