Every Fourth Jan Dhan Account Inoperative, 5.72 Crore Have Zero Balance: RTI

JAIPUR, Sep 3: Nearly one in every four accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is inoperative, while around 5.72 crore accounts have zero balance, according to information provided under the Right to Information Act.

As of August 12, 2026, more than 59 crore PMJDY accounts were operational across the country, collectively holding over Rs 3.15 lakh crore, according to the RTI response.

The Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance provided the information in response to an RTI application filed by activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur.

The department said a total of 59,03,74,907 PMJDY accounts had been opened nationwide, with an aggregate balance of Rs 3,15,179.90 crore.

The figures highlight the continued scale of the government's financial inclusion programme, while the large number of zero-balance and inoperative accounts points to challenges in ensuring sustained usage of accounts opened under the scheme.
