Mumbai, September 13: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the BJP-led NDA governments in 21 states will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before 2029.
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Shah highlighted the achievements of the Narendra Modi government over the past 12 years and the BJP’s 25-year journey under Modi’s leadership.
Shah said the abolition of triple talaq had ensured equal rights for Muslim women and noted that several states had already introduced the UCC.
He also highlighted reforms in the criminal justice system through the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, claiming that several states had witnessed a 30 per cent rise in conviction rates in a single year. He said efforts were underway to establish a system under which justice could be delivered within three years.
On national security, Shah said the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A was carried out without bloodshed or firing, asserting that Jammu and Kashmir was now fully integrated with India.
He claimed that the government had ended five decades of Naxalism and signed more than 14 peace agreements in the Northeast. More than 9,000 people had surrendered, he said, adding that the region was now on the path of development.
Shah said surgical strikes, air strikes and Operation Sindoor demonstrated the government’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism.
On the proposed 1951 baseline for implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, Shah said the Centre was consulting its allies and political parties in the state. He said the government would announce its decision after discussions.
Asked about identifying illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators in cities such as Mumbai, Shah said the government would not disclose the methods being used for their detection, arguing that doing so could undermine the process.
Reiterating the government’s stand, he said every illegal infiltrator would be identified and deported from the country.
On the anti-drug campaign, Shah said he had recently launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and would visit every state as part of the initiative. He expressed confidence that the campaign would reach the grassroots and that India would succeed in its fight against drugs.
