7.1-Magnitude Quake Strikes Southern Japan; Tsunami Advisory Issued

Tokyo, Jul 28: A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu on Tuesday afternoon, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami advisory, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. According to the JMA, the earthquake struck at 4:29 pm local time at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the sea off the western coast of Kumamoto Prefecture, about 900 kilometres southwest of Tokyo. No immediate reports of casualties or significant damage were received following the strong tremor. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat beyond local coastal areas, while Japanese authorities continued to monitor the situation and urged residents in affected coastal regions to remain alert and follow official advisories.
